Visual FX Course

This intensive one-day studio and classroom VFX course is led by award-winning, global animation and VFX company DNEG. This course will introduce you to how a VFX shot is created from inception to final composite, covering pre-production, shoot and post-production stages and includes a hands-on session with a digital stills camera.

Lead Tutor

This is a bespoke service catering for all skill levels, where participants will have the opportunity to engage with a highly experienced course instructor from DNEG’s in-house training programme “Greenlight”.

DNEG’s in-house Greenlight programmes deliver intensive dedicated training, live production experience and mentoring with existing DNEG artists and supervisors. Greenlight has been designed to offer the support and expertise to fully realise the potential of the next generation of VFX artists.

Certificate

On the successful completion of your course, you will be awarded a personalised Irish Film School Certificate of Completion in VFX, signed by DNEG, in recognition of your educational achievement.

Day 1: Visual FX Overview

Detailed Content

Day 1: This course consists of four modules and includes a hands-on session with a digital stills camera:

  • Pre-production
  • Production
  • Hands-on with camera kit for digital stills capture
  • Post-production: Assets
  • Post-production: Shots

MODULE 1: PRE-PRODUCTION

This module will focus on what happens before you go on-set. You will look at:

  • Pitching for VFX
  • Concept art to illustrate ideas
  • Visualising a shot with Previs
  • Planning for the shoot with Techvis

MODULE 2: PRODUCTION

This training module will focus on what happens during the shoot and the data you need to acquire for VFX shots. You will look at:

  • Shooting plates for VFX
  • Element Shoots
  • On-set data acquisition
  • Capturing performances

MODULE 3: POST-PRODUCTION - ASSETS

With the shoot in-progress or possibly complete, you can now focus on creating the assets. This module will cover:

  • Preparing on-set VFX data
  • Modelling for VFX
  • Painting surface details and creating materials
  • Digital hair, fur and feathers
  • Creating digital puppets

MODULE 4: POST-PRODUCTION - SHOTS

With your assets created, the film scans the on-set data available; you can now start adding your CG elements to the shots. This module will cover:

  • Matching a digital camera to a real-world camera
  • Post-visualisation
  • Body/object tracking elements in a shot
  • Composing a shot in Layout
  • Adding weight to movement in Animation
  • Adding dynamic effects to cloth, hair, muscle, skin and crowds
  • Creating a believable and abstract FX
  • Shot fixing a shot
  • Creating digital environments and set extensions
  • Lighting a VFX shot
  • Rotoscoping and plate preparation
  • Bringing the VFX elements together in Compositing

This one-day Visual FX course is designed to give you a hands-on and intensive introduction into the utilisation of VFX in film or TV show in today’s global market.

Learning Outcome

At the end of the course you will have learnt how a VFX shot is created from inception to final composite through all stages of a production – pre-production, shoot and post-production. You will have had hands-on training with a digital stills camera to help illustrate some key aspects of on-set data acquisition.
